In the Karst region of SLOVENIA, people have been taking advantage of the nature and its gifts for centuries. Juniper berries play an important role in Slovene cuisine and folk medicine. The berries need several years to ripen, are dark blue in colour, with a tart, bitter and buttery taste. They can only be picked by hand. Then, the crushed juniper berries need to be fermented for several weeks, followed by distillation. Few locals still put in all this effort to produce the precious juniper brandy and juniper oil which is worth its weight in gold. Taste the sweetness and enjoy the harmonious aroma of juniper.

THE LJUBLJANA DRAGON. The dragon, the symbol of Ljubljana, represents power, courage and greatness, and from the Baroque (17th century) onwards, it has been depicted in the Ljubljana coat of arms. ŠKOFJA LOKA is a historic town that has grown where two rivers meet. It is situated on the edge of the Sorško polje plain, at the foot of the Škofjeloško hribovje and Polhograjsko hribovje mountain ranges. The old town centre dates back to the Middle Ages. Its focal points are the bell tower of the church of St. Jacob and the Loški grad castle, the home of the Škofja Loka Museum, which houses a variety of collections and exhibits. Distinguished by a number of houses with colourful fronts, the town was once also known as Pisana Loka (Colourful Loka). Another highlight is the mid-14th century bridge Kamniti most, also known as Kapucinski most, the oldest stone bridge in Slovenia.

BOHINJ is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Triglav National Park, in the heart of the Julian Alps. This long, wide valley is adorned with rich alpine limestone flora, diverse fauna and numerous natural attractions. Lake Bohinj is tectonic and glacial in origin, while its primary inflow is the Savica River. Alpine dairy farming and cheese making used to be practised in the valley. The famous kozolec (hayrack) also originates from this region. TRIGLAV (2864m) is the highest Slovenian mountain, considered a Slovenian national symbol and source of pride, and is featured on our national coat-of-arms. The only Slovenian national park, Triglav National Park, was named after the mountain. The beauty of Triglav is described in many poems, such as Oj, Triglav, moj dom (Oh, Triglav, My Home). The poem was set to music by Jakob Aljaž, the composer, priest, and mountaineer after whom the tower on the top of Triglav is named.

ALJAŽ TOWER is the highest mountain shelter in Slovenia. It is located at the top of Mt Triglav (2864m), where Jakob Aljaž, priest, composer, and mountaineer, erected it in 1895. In 1999, the tower was declared a cultural monument of national importance. It contains only moderate, essential equipment – a logbook and a stamp. During bad weather conditions, it can provide four mountaineers with shelter.

THE KINGDOM OF GOLDHORN is a tale about Goldhorn, a wonderful buck with golden horns, which has been preserved in the Slovenian oral tradition as a reflection of the profound relationship between man and nature. KRANJ is an historic town in the foothills of the Alps that was developed on a conglomerate promontory between the Sava and Kokra Rivers.
